The #1 Key To Personal And Professional Development

I just returned from a week-long family vacation. As with any vacation, the ultimate goal is rest and relaxation. While my large family tends to preclude that, the breaking away for reflection and recharging were helpful to regain perspective.

One of the things we as leaders tend to forget when we go along our working and personal lives is the thing that generally separates successful leaders from the pack. It’s the main key for success in any endeavor, and the #1 way to keep growing personally and professionally. The key is to:

Make Time For Your Own Development Daily

During vacation time it was great to re-calibrate and realize the value of spending time in personal development and planning. This was reinforced by two media sources – an article on embracing the 5-Hour Rule, and a podcast from Chris LoCurto who advised a listener to seek a balance in their business that allows them to have time to develop themselves apart from their work.

Leaders who take the opportunity cost to spend time on themselves may balk at not being able to make other business decisions or accomplish other tasks. But the step-back-to-leap-forward power of spending time with yourself daily is such a powerful tool in the hands of great leaders that those who faithfully execute this find themselves accomplishing more and with more meaningful results.

In spending an hour of you day on development, you will in effect:

  • Be more proactive and take steps to mitigate issues before they manifest
  • Read and sharpen your mind and critical thinking skills
  • Take stock of your own growth and find what works and what needs improvement
  • Plan those tasks to align with your goals
  • Find creative ways to problem solve
  • Break away from events controlling you towards you being in control of events

These skills have been used by many leaders, from Benjamin Franklin to Warren Buffet to Elon Musk. While each of these leaders take their time from themselves and spend it differently, they all take that necessary time to grow, learn, and to eventually be more of an influence to their world than they would be by charging ahead to the day’s calling.

This is the most vital key to your growth. Whether you spend the time on planning, reading, faith-based devotions, reflecting, or some other means, you will find yourself more in touch with what is going on around you, and feeling a sense of impact in being able to shape your world rather than having it shape you into a reactionary leader.

Take an hour in your day to plan, learn, grow, and reflect. The investment will pay enormous dividends in your life.
